Astigmatism is a refractive error where a person’s vision becomes blurry. Normal vision occurs when the incoming light enters through cornea, bends through lens and falls directly on the back of the eye i.e. retina.
The normal shape of the cornea is a round like a basketball, however, in case of astigmatism;the corneais more curved in one axis causing it to become more conical. Hence, the focal point does not touch the retina to give normal and clear vision.
In other words, the light rays bend in such a way that the focal point may occur before the retina or outside it in one meridian more than the other. Therefore, astigmatism will result in blurry vision for near, far as well as for intermediate objects.
Options for Correcting Astigmatism:
There are few ways to correct this refractive error, which are eyeglasses, contact lenses and refractive surgery like Lasik.
Eyeglasses: Visit your nearest eye care professional who will prescribe suitable lenses for your eyeglasses to correct your vision. This is the safest way to correct astigmatism.
Refractive Surgery (also known as Lasik Eye Surgery or Laser Vision Correction)The purpose of this laser surgery is to change the shape of your cornea permanently. This adjustment brings the light rays to focus precisely on the retina there by bringing your vision clarity to normal.
As the name of the lens is self-explanatory,these types of lenses touch the outermost surface of your eye, i.e. cornea and help to bring the focal point on retina .However, for those who wish to opt for contact lenses instead of eyeglasses or refractive laser surgery, the eye care industry has flooded the market with a variety of choices in contact lenses to choose from. Let’s take a look at these new variety of lenses.
Toric Contact Lenses:
Toric contact lenses are designed in such an effective way that it rotates to adjust according to the bent curve of the cornea so that the power of lens aligns with the eye and thus gives the patient a clear vision. Soft toric lens made up of silicon and hydrogel (lens material) is used to correct astigmatism as well as minimize the spherical power (for e.g. +3, +5 etc.) of eye. It is important to understand that general soft contacts are used to correct either myopia or hypermetropia.
Gas Permeable Contact Lenses:
These types of lenses are referred as rigid gas permeable (RGP) or GP contact lenses. It has shown that that GP lenses correct astigmatism without having the rotating feature of lens like soft toric lens. This is mainly due to its rigidity to stick to the cornea rather than taking up its distorted shape.
Hybrid Contact Lenses
These types of contact lenses are another good choice for correcting astigmatism in severe cases. These are used for patients having eye conditions like Keratoconus, where cornea is totally distorted and hence the image is very blurry and there are multiple shadow images also seen by patients affected by keratoconus. The aim of the contact lenses is to not conform to the surface of distorted cornea and also stay on the eye for longer periods without much discomfort. Hybrid lenses combine the advantages of soft lenses and the RGP lenses.

Scleral lenses are the best lenses for advanced cases of Keratoconus where no other lens gives comfort or vision clarity. Scleral lenses are larger lenses and rest on the white part of the eye called the Sclera. Scleral lenses are separated from cornea by the tear film layer in between
Other Special designed Contacts Lenses:
Over the last few years, contact lenses category has displayed a positive curve in terms of plethora of choices being available to select from. There are disposable lenses, which have toric design that can be used, not only monthly, biweekly but even daily. In addition to this, there are also colored contact lenses which correct astigmatism as well as enhance the color of your eye.
Despite the above given information, it is pertinent to note that corneal abnormalities in every patient are unique, hence the type of the lens and general well-being also have a bearing on deciding the type of lenses or other corrective measures of astigmatism. Therefore, it is always better to consult an eye specialist at a good eye hospital before selecting any choice of solution or remedy for your eye problem.
