A 71-year-old, Mr. Manohar Patil*(name changed) Navi Mumbaikar; social activist and a reformer was happy with his life until one day an incident changed everything. While returning home from a puja late at night; he had a near-miss head-on collision but was luckily saved. Mr. Patil was shaken by the incident and couldn’t understand how this could happen. Though he was happy that it wasn’t anything major; but the mere fact that his driving skills were deteriorating troubled him.
Days passed by and he forgot about the incident. But he was reminded again about the incident while he was reading one of his favourite Bengali authors- Sunil Gangopadhay. He realized the incident occurred due to his blurring vision which he hadn’t taken seriously.
He decided to get an eye check-up done and had changed his glasses immediately. But his troubles didn’t end there yet. After changing his glasses, he still faced issues reading and driving. To avoid any harm to himself or others; he stopped driving and decided to stay indoors as much as possible. This made me feel caged as he missed his social activities and decided to meet an eye specialist who diagnosed him as having cataract in both the eyes. Mr. Patil grew apprehensive about undergoing a cataract surgery but his best friend who knew him for 50 years suggested he pay a visit to the best eye hospital in Navi Mumbai-Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute (AEHI) located at Sanpada.
On reaching AEHI, Mr. Patil went through a series of eye examination and had his consult with Dr. Vandana Jain, Cataract and Cornea Specialist. Mr. Patil had a few concerns about cataract surgery which Dr. Vandana Jain answered patiently. Dr. Vandana Jain went a step ahead and discussed the deleterious effects of postponing a cataract surgery. The passionate care Dr. Vandana Jain displayed won over Mr. Patil’s concerns and he decided to go ahead with the surgery. The cataract in the right eye needed prompt attention and hence Mr. Patil had scheduled his right eye cataract surgery. On the day of surgery, his blood pressure was checked which was a little high due to his anxiety. After administering medications for his high blood pressure and anxiousness, numbing drops were added to his eye to begin the cataract operation.
Dr. Vandana Jain talked him through the surgery and before he knew it; it was done. Mr. Patil was amazed at how the surgery happened in 20 minutes and he could even go home the same day. During his follow-up visit, he was happy that he could see much more clearly now. He was then scheduled for cataract operation of the left eye. He couldn’t wait to have both his eyes see the same clear vision.
The day of surgery came by and Mr. Patil was looking forward to surgery. This time he didn’t have issues with his blood pressure for he knew he was in the hands of the best eye specialist in Navi Mumbai. Dr. Vandana Jain added numbing drops and started working on the cataract in the left eye. 15 minutes passed away and Mr. Patil was now a free man. He knew tomorrow he would be able to see clearly. As he waited in recovery he discussed how cataract impacted his life and made him feel left out among his peers. He is grateful to Dr. Vandana Jain and AEHI staff for restoring his life.
Today he is back on the roads driving to various social gatherings. But that’s not it; one can always find him carrying his Sunil Gangpadhyay book which he retires to read, as and when he gets a chance.
