Case of Ruhi an 8-year-old girl was brought by her parents at Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute (AEHI) with complaints for her corneal scar in her left which she sustained due to the firecracker in Diwali.

 

After the Laxmipoojan Ruhi went out with her friends to light crackers in the playground. She was standing close to the firecracker she lighted and was, waiting to check if it had lit properly. She got an injury to her left eye due to the sparklers. Her parents washed her eyes with water and took her to the nearby physician who checked her eye and administered an eye drop. After putting the eye drop, she somehow slept. But in the morning as she got up her left eye was red, swollen and painful. Ruhi’s parents immediately rushed her to Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute (AEHI), located at Palm Beach road, Navi Mumbai.

 

 

Ruhi’s eyes were checked in the emergency department and she was sent to Dr. Vandana Jain, Cataract and Cornea Specialist at AEHI. Dr. Vandana Jain checked her eyes and noticed corneal scar in her left eye. (Cornea is the transparent white part in front of the eye). Dr. Vandana Jain carried few special tests to know the depth of eye caused to the eye. She did a fluorescein eye stain test which included numbing the eyes with an anaesthetic drop followed by adding a dye to the eye in the form of drops. Then the eye is visualised in a blue light. Ruhi was lucky that the cracker has not caused deep injury to her eye.  Dr Vandana Jain managed it medically. Few antibiotic eye drops were administered for her eyes to prevent infection and for early healing.

Ruhi came for her follow-up visit after 4 days in which her eyes swelling and redness was reduced. Her vision was normal, she could see clearly without any difficulty.

Ruhi was lucky enough that her eyes were saved on time. Ruhi’s parents are very thankful to Dr. Vandana Jain for saving the eyes of their daughter. 

Take Home Message:

Children should always be accompanied by adults while bursting crackers.

Ignite crackers only outdoors (open spaces).

Avoid use of multiple firecrackers at the same time.

In the case of eye injury immediately consult ophthalmologists.

Do not rub your eyes after an eye injury.
