Increase in Blood pressure can affect your Eyes

What is Hypertensive Retinopathy?

It is the damage caused to the retina and the retinal circulation due to systemic hypertension (i.e. high blood pressure). Patients with hypertensive retinopathy will present with virtually no visual symptoms till profound vision loss occurs. They usually report with headache or blurred vision.

Here we present a case of Mr Raj Patel;40 yrs. old male, a business man by profession who visited Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute (AEHI); located at Sanpada, Navi Mumbai with complaints of decreased vision and swelling in his eyes that he noticed since a week, along with constant never ending headaches. He was a known case of Hypertension since 3 years and not compliant with his antihypertensive medicines since last 6 months.   His complaints of headache and decreased vision started disturbing him both professionally as well as in his personal life. He became extremely apprehensive about his vision and this made him visit an eye specialist at AEHI.

One of his friend, asked him to visit Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute for it was the best eye hospital in Navi Mumbai. On the day of appointment he reached AEHI with his friend and he got his eyes examined in the optometry department. He was further referred to Dr. Yogesh Patil, Vitreo Retinal Surgeon who on examining his retina found him to have hypertensive retinopathy. Dr. Yogesh Patil advised him for further investigation.

OCT and Fluorescein angiography (FFA) test was done to examine the blood vessels and swelling in the Retina.

Mr Raj Patel’s Blood pressure was checked which was alarmingly high.

After all the series of examination, Dr. Yogesh Patil explained him that he has swelling in his retina i.e. Retinal Oedema which was a result of his hypertension. Dr. Yogesh Patil diagnosed the condition as Hypertensive Retinopathy. Mr Raj was surprised as to how his blood pressure caused problem in his eyes.

Hypertension when uncontrolled can cause problem in eye. Increase in blood pressure can cause improper blood circulation in the eye hence affecting the function of the eye.

Dr. Yogesh Patil suggested him to consult a physician for his Hypertension and get his blood pressure controlled by the hypertensive medicines. Other than that Dr. Yogesh Patil administered him some eye drops for retinal swelling to reduce.

After a month Mr Raj Patel came for his follow up visit, which showed that the swelling in his retina has reduced and even his hypertensive medicines have helped him in controlling the blood pressure. He had no complaints of headache or vision problems.

Mr Raj Patel was very thankful to Dr. Yogesh Patil for restoring his vision. He was advised to have his eye examination done in every 3 months to avoid eye problems.
